Hey guys, trying to troubleshoot my riding mower, a Cub Cadet LT1050 I bought in 2006.

Been working fine for a while, starting about a month ago, it would very occasionally (and interestingly, always in the same spot) suddenly stop moving forward, the belt for the mower deck would stop, and then it would begin smoking (can't tell from where). Shutting off the engine, and restarting it, everything worked fine again.

Until today, where it started doing it in my backyard and every time I restarted it and moved forward it would shut down again. Interestingly, I can drive in reverse just fine. It's almost like when I'm going forward somehow something just disengages. I'm lost on where to start troubleshooting this.

On a side note, I did recently replace deck pulleys that were frozen in place, but I dont see any reason why this would be related. Oil levels are fine and clean and so is the air filter. No noticeable misfires or anything from the engine either.

any ideas?

So now when you put it in a forward gear, the engine now shuts off, or the mower will stop moving?

Also, post your tractor's model numbers from under/behind the seat.

I'll run down and find the model # when I get a second. There's no "gear" per se in my rider, just the bidirectional foot pedal (forward / reverse). When I go forward, it will move forward a bit, then just sporadically stop moving forward, the mower deck stops spinning (if PTO is engaged) and it starts smoking. The engine does continue to run, I need to shut it off with the key.

The belt isn't spinning at that point which was my first guess for something "smoking"....

Again this was happening very sporadically up until just today when I was 80% done cutting my lawn and then it just would do it over and over again. I had to reverse all the way back to the garage :)

If the pto is not engaged can you drive around ?

Pull the lever on the rearend to make it free wheel and push the mower a few feet forward then start the engine and push the speed pedal down and up a few times. Take it out of free wheel and give it a try.

If it still smokes the belt find the pulley that is hot.

(( cowboy up and get over it ))

Nope, even with the PTO disengaged and driving forward it still just stops and starts smoking

Does the engine have an oil leak?

Nope, checked oil and all is good. I'm too nervous to let it continue smoking to poke around mroe and see what it is; I really can't tell.

Well, it is likely the drive belt that is smoking, you ought to remove the deck so you can get a better look. You likely have something locking up
and smoking the belt, so popping the drive belt loose and rotating all of those pulleys checking for a bad one would be a good idea. Also look at
the condition of the belt, as it may just be totally shot and need replaced.
