I have a 2007 MTD CVT riding lawn mower. the engine cranks over very slowly. I have changed the ballery, starter and solenoid. I have also removed the fenders and cleaned all electrical wire connections. All electrical switches have been checked and are working correctly. Have I missed something?
If it’s on the compression stroke, it might turnover 1/2 turn. If coming off the compression stroke it might turn about 1 1/2 turns, once in a while it will start.
Remove the spark plug and crank the engine.
If it cranks over fine without the spark plug but won't with the plug in then you have a compression release problem.
The usual reason for this is excessive valve lash
Adjust the valves ( I use 0.004" each side ) .
IF that makes no difference reduce the inlet to 0.002"
If that makes no different then the cam shaft decompressor is deceased .
Thanks to all who helped. The valves were out of adjustment. I reset the valves to .004, the starts like it was new. Again thanks for the helpful information.
