Craftsman R110 Ignition Issue

I have a 30 inch Craftsman R110 riding mower and the ignition fuse keeps blowing. The wife was using the mower when the idler arm came loose and ripped the deck belt and bent the belt pulley. I am not sure of the status of the drive shaft. Any ideas where to look first for the short? Is there any wiring a shredded deck belt might damage?

With this type of damage, all of the wiring, safety switches and connectors need to be inspected. Another issue is the key switch can be possibly shorted inside. Don't expect this to be a one part "magic bullet" repair.

If you are not good with electrical and have no basic diagnostic tools, you need to look for an experienced mechanic or shop that can check this problem out and diagnose it.
 
I was out of town and my wife had a neighbor come and look at it and he said it was blowing ignition fuses, but didn’t know where the short was. When I returned I noticed the neighbor disconnected the kill switch on the shoot, but the ignition fuse was good – but still nothing when I turned the key. I dropped the deck and didn’t see any issues. Should I be able to start the mower with the deck off and the shoot kill switch disconnected? Is there another safety switch I should look at?

Hello D.,

The Chute switch has to be connected or use a paper clip to pump the connector pins temporarily. This will complete the safety circuit. The fuse may still blow due to another issue. Do not try to jumper the fuse holder or put in a bigger fuse because that may cause wires to overheat and burn.

A seat switch harness could be pinched, so inspect all wiring.
 
I was able to find the issue. When the deck belt shredded it chafed the wire going to the blade and chute safety switches. I was able to use tape and get the engine running. Now I just need to replace the deck belt, idler guide and belt keeper to see if it actually works.
