I have a Craftsman lt1000 and a Craftsman YT 3000. The yt3000 the engine exploded no idea how old owner managed to do that lol it looks brand new It has a Briggs and Stratton 21hp platinum 540cc xrd engine.
The lt1000 is in ok not the best of shape it runs tires and blades shot ect it has a Briggs and Stratton16 hp OVH i/c Engine.

I was looking at replacement motors for the 3000 and they cost to much no used for sale locally either. I looked at both motors it Looks like engine that is on the lt1000 will bolt up and plug in it all looks like the same even the pulley on the underside. However one is 21hp and one is 16hp do you guys think that is to big of a difference? Or can i get away with it?

You will be fine.
Worst case is you will have to drive a little slower cutting 3' long wet grass going up hills towing a yard of firewood

Hydros gobble up power just the same as early automatics ripped 1/3 of the Hp from car engines.
Vari drives gobble up substantially less and manual gearboxes less again
Back in the manual days 8 / 30's were the norm and that would be 11 / 42 for the most popular deck size now days .
But for the same reason that now days a small city car needs an engine that used to power a 20 ton truck 10 years ago, a 42" deck seems to need a 20 HP engine

Besides engine running like shit it appears to work fine more then enough power Think i need to get a carb for and a plug i flushed it once but it runs real choppy this motor sat for a long time.
