The engine is a B&S 31P977-0575-E. When you hit tall grass it will smoke but normally it is fine. Turned it off and it restarted.
Should I be concern and start taking action

Every time the engine is under stress like cutting a patch of tall grassBefore using the mower I checked the oil and it was low.
I had never had to add oil In the past. I think it is biurning oil

I have one does the same thing. Burns a little oil when under a load.
Been going it for around 500 hours now.
Has not lost any power.

I switched the brand of oil I use because I got it at $1.50 a quart. Second oil change and no more burning oil.

Just an idea. External oil on e.g., muffler. Extra load=extra heat burning off old oil film?

I caused my problem, When I filled it with oil I overfilled it an oil change and the correct amount of oil corrected the problem,.
I don't like it losing oil I will try to determine why. Thanks to all who replied

Could be a blown head gasket.
Briggs tells me that they are now recommending 300 in/Lbs. instead of the previous 210.
