My lawn tractor is the 16.5 HP Kohler, Elec Start, 46" mower, 6 speed transaxle, Model 917.272010

Starts up okay, but runs a bit hot and backfires a little when gas is let off quickly.

Stalls when the clutch/brake is let off in neutral.

Stalls when put into gear and then let the clutch/brake out.

Stalls when the PTO is engaged.

The seat safety has been bypassed.

The machine hasn't been used in 2 years! Everything was working when it was put away. Problems started when trying to put it back in service.
I would greatly appreciate constructive remarks in getting my machine running again. Thank You All

Give all of the safety switches a good spray with your favourite goo.
WD 40 , RP7 etc etc.
Really flood then while working the switches then do the same plugging in & unplugging.

You have corrosion in the switches or somethig has nested in the mower and had a midnight snack on the wiring.

What Bert said is a possibility but it is more likely the fuel system is partially plugged up due to it sitting for a long time. you may have ran it out of gas, but unless you took the carburetor off and cleaned it before storing it, it had some gas left in it. this could partially plug the jets. It sounds like it is running lean which would cause it to run hot and potentially stall out because there is no power.
Go to Home Depot and buy a bottle of mechanic in a bottle. pour that into the gas tank. start the unit and let it run for 5-10 minutes. then let it sit for a few hours. then run the unit normally.
i would do this first before chasing the electrical issues. it is easier.
