I acquired a Craftsman 6.5HP 22" model 917.387681 side discharge rotary lawn mower with a B & S engine to attempt to clean up an get running again. Can someone help me figure out the age of the unit? Serial; # 092905M 051967. I'm trying to figure out how much $ money to put into it. Also, it's not a self propelled unit is it? Thank you.

Well, the owner's manual on searspartsdirect has a copyright of 2005. It's not listed as self propelled. . And I think the build date is January 9, 2005. Operative word think.

09 = year so 2009
29 = day
05 = month
so may 2009 for the engine which makes it an 09 / 10 if it is the original engine.

Read Owners Manual first thoroughly.

Sorry to correct you Bert, but I believe the code number is 051967, which would make it a 2005.

September 29, 2005 Numbers in front of the letter are month day year. Numbers after the letter are the production serial number.

IF the engine is a Briggs and Stratton, the model type code number will contain the engine build date. the numbers posted here are not the model-type-code, which would be 6 digits (or 5 and you need to add a zero at the beginning) then 4 digits, then 2 digits(usually a letter followed by a number), then the code(8 digits) starting with the build date in reverse order (year, month, day, shift) a typical model type code looks like 09j702-0003-f1 050901002. the code in my example (05091002) is a build date of September 01, 2005

you can typically find these numbers on the metal shield over the muffler, on the front of the engine shroud, or on the side of the engine case. in every case they will be stamped in.

go to partstree.com for the craftsman mower part and the engine part. you have the numbers for both.

Just my personal opinion, but I don't think you should put much stock in the age of the engine in determining whether you should fix it or not. The overall condition should be the deciding factor. There are plenty of engines that are 15-20 years old and are in much better shape than 5yo engines and are cheaper to repair.
