Craftsman II Riding Lawnmower engine repair

I've looked everywhere for an oil seal for an old Craftsman II Riding Lawnmower 12HP engine (Model: 917 255 740); Sears doesn't support the engine anymore. The engine starts up and sounds fine, but throws oil everywhere. I do my own engine work on my car, so this sounds like any easy fix if I could just find the part. . .Help!:frown:

Just bring the seal number or seal size to a NAPA dealer and they should be able to help you out. The number should be on the old seal some place.

Just get the numbers off the engine and look up the part that way from the manufacturer website. Most likely it is a briggs engine.

Sears does not change the part number from the OEM part number. Parts are available from any dealer that supports the manufacturer that made the component. Most engines are either briggs or kohler, transmissions are peerless, spicer, or hydrogear, the rest is most likely poulan, mtd, murray, snapper.

You could check some of those 'backyard mechanics' places. Like around here, theres always an ad in the newspaper where someones put in an ad saying something along the lines of "Need your mower fixed but can't find the part for whatever reason? Call me! I can fix it!!" - Look for one of those ads.. I mean, you might not have anyone in your area that works on them as a hobby... but around here there are quite a few older people that work on them as a hobby/side business from their homes.. and some of them even have legitimate shops.

You can try that.. or, if its just a seal your needing... you could always improvise and make one yourself or have someone make one for you. Might be cheaper than the stock original seal.. or it might cost a little more.. either way, with Sears/Crafstman no longer backing those engines... its better than nothing.

i wouldnt use a used seal on the crank caseing that would b like reuseing gaskets it better to find the part number and order a new one you can find em at any small engine shop or even find em on e bay if u know your part number its noy to hard to do u have to remove the motor and split the case when u do put it back togeather make shure timeing marks are correct and mind your tourqes and youl b fine

Probably a Tecumseh. Find the model numbers off of the engine!!!

A little detective work shows that the exhaust gasket is a Briggs part number. Find the Briggs model numbers!!!!! Any mower shop would have a crate full of PTO seals for a flathead 12 h.p.!!!!!!!!!
