Someone brought me a Craftsman/MTD snow blower (Powermore Engine with Huayi carb)to repair and I found the idle jet in the carb had a broken off drill bit in it. I do not want to replace the carb with a generic aftermarket. Yes they are inexpensive, but, I find they are a crap shoot and I am not a gambler. I already have a hefty bill for this person and do not want to spend over $100 for an OEM carb from MTD. The MTD Rebuild kit (951-12712) is about $50 and it does have a new idle jet in it. All I need is the idle jet. I have tried a Honda/Preditor idle jets and they do not fit this Huayi branded carb. They are different enough. I have seen some cheaper kits but they do not have the idle jet. Am I missing some other options? I want to run this by you experts before I pull the trigger. Thoughts?

Get us the model number of the snow blower as well as the model number of the engine and then we can see what we can find to assist you

Hello N.,

I agree, aftermarket carburetors are a crapshoot.

Possibly there is a used one on eBay that you can use for parts, otherwise take the hit and buy the $50.kit with the idle jet you need. If the customer wants the machine fixed correctly, they will spend the money on quality repairs.

My policy is customer pays for parts up front or as a job progresses, then labor can be settled once it is fully tested and ready. I no longer absorb the cost of parts to fix their machine just to have them abandoned when it came time to pay the bill at the end.

The old days of a customer dropping off equipment and saying "call me when it's done" are over. This approach has caused way too many good shops to shut down because they overextended themselves.

I dont have the engine number handy but the C'man number is 247.887800. The Engine is a 179cc 4 stroke Powermore. I did see that kit on eBay. It always makes me a bit nervous when they do not show the components or the package with the part number on it. I saw one for even less $, but it was missing the idle jet, according the picture of the components.

The 247.887800 IPL is showing a 265-JU. If that is the case and you have the Hauyi then the carb kit is 951-14050 HAUYI instead of the 951-12712 DENI. Now the 365-SUB does show the same kits.

Now I can't find any online that match my distributor price for the 951-14050.

Make sure the customer knows about the broken off drill bit in jet, especially if they paid another shop.

Thanks for this info. I did some more digging and the Engine is 265-JU-11. The MTD number for this Craftsman model is 31AS2S5D799. Model year 2010. The Sears Parts Direct site did not provide this detail and listed the 951-12712 as the carb repair kit. Which is contradicted by your info and two other parts look up sites I used. I will trust the 14050 to be the correct kit for this Huayi carb. I guess there is a chance the idle jets are the same but how would anyone know? It is a more expensive kit indeed. I wish I had a donor carb. I am going to look through my junk again and see. My guess is that jet opening is in the .014 to .018" range. Just from limited experience in playing with these. It will work better than 0. which is what it is now.

I will for sure show the customer the jet with the broken drill bit. For what it is worth I have always had better luck opening the main jet .002" when a machine of this type surges. I am always very reluctant to touch anything like this as it is a permanent change.

FYI I have used Sears parts direct for Craftsman products in the past and found it accurate. In the past most of their pricing has been on the high side but some items could be reasonable. In Recent times I have noticed their pricing to be absurd. Like $30 for hardware store bolt, etc. If they do not want to sell such items I can understand that. Who are they trying to impress? It almost seems like they want to kill the business. Which may be the actual truth as that is what happened with their Brick and Mortar stores. Pillaged by private equity.

Yes Sears has gotten overly pricey.

The problem here is there are two carbs that can be used. The engine is a MTD engine so that is the route I took thru PartSmart IPL system. Of course I wish they would put jet sizes but they are keeping that a secret. They don't even list a PN for the idle jet; most likely an air bleed jet.

As see below even the fuel bowl gasket is different. Carb kit highlighted for the Hauyi.
