I recently moved into a farm I purchased in Waterford, Ontario. I also inherited the lawn tractor that looks as if it hadn't been used in a few years. At least by the owners of the past 6 years. The tractor started right up & the oil is clean. I had an issue trying to start it until I realized that the mower engagement lever had to be right down as to activate the start switch. Right off I think there is a spring missing & this lever should default to the start position. I have no other springs on the mower deck other than the one attached to this lever. Is this correct? Thanks

I have a manual in PDF for a Sears Lt1000 Lawn Tractor with a 42" deck but it doesn't match your serial number.
However, if you think a copy of it might help you figure it out I can email it to you. Just let me know.
BTW, if the pedal doesn't always move back to where it needs to to start, just move it back with your foot. That is what I sometimes had to do. I believe there is an adjustment rod. When you get the deck on this mower be sure to get the pedal adjusted properly or your belt will keep popping off when you stop.

There is no spring on the engagement handle. The linkage on the deck probably needs to to be lubricated. Or could be bent.
I did find a spring on the engagement handle. It wraps back on itself from the pivot point at the base of the handle.
I guess the previous owners must have played with the mower deck & not had a clue what they were doing. I hot the springs for the brakes & put eve thing back where is was suppose to be & every thing is fine now.
I looked at the mower deck pic on your original post, it looks like the horizontal link is on wrong too.
A word of warning: these decks are thin, and rust thru in a season if you don't keep them clean and dry. I patched mine back up twice, and finally put 4 coats of brush on bed liner to combat the rust problem
