Hi there,

I have a Craftsman 12.5 HP 30" Riding Mower (944.601380). which unfortunately the the drive stopped worked on basically the clutch plates broke. Cross referencing part #s the actual component is discontinued. Part I am looking for is #441097 or 532441097 - Plate Clutch Drive its called, which is #59 on blow up diagram.

Looking to see if anyone has any ideas or help on how to tackle this and potentially find a replacement that would work.

EDIT: Photo of machine added.

Even the complete assy PN 580393001 is NLA. About you can do is look for another mower that is being parted out.

Appreciate the response. Any idea if that clutch material could be purchased as a blank and I could trace out my own peace? I have the clutch plates that were on it, they just cracked.. if these could be glued/welded back together I guess that would do the trick but I don't think either of those would be a viable solution.

There are firms that rebuild automotive clutch plates. They can make the part if you can find the right company, otherwise it's a hunt for NOS on Google.

Not sounding well at all basically. What a shame as the machine overall is in fantastic shape

I know the feeling I recently a well maintained Yazoo ZTR which was Husqvarna ZTR in different clothes. 22 yrs old and no parts available. I ended up having to use a beer can to fix it.

there are many threads on the clutch packs. The people who have fixed them have made their own plates. That said, I could not even find a manual for the unit or full parts diagram without having to pay for it, and the tractor number doesn't even come up on many sites. Why, I have no idea.

I found a manual under the PB30. I was hoping the whole assembly had a part number, or a clue that would lead to someone maybe repairing them but it looks like each part is separate. The manufacturer of the assembly appears to be a company named Dixon and they were used about 10 years ago in quite a few units. I can find nothing on a source for any parts. The last price on the rebuild kit was about $275 - $300 so that seems a lot. Might be time to either make the parts or call around to the bone yards to see if anyone has the whole unit or used friction discs in working condition.

I have no idea how to make one but when i did a Google on the part many threads came up like yours and the people who solved the issue made their own. You would need to figure out what the material is, roughly the original thickness, obtain the material, use an old one to trace the part out, cut and use a dremel or something to cut them. Or if you have access to CAD you could draw it out in CAD to the specs a plasma cutter would use and take the file to someone with a plasma cutter to make four so you had some the next time.

I had one just like that one. The absolute best mulching walk behind mower ever made.

@StarTech and @sgkent , wouldn’t this assembly be the same as the Craftsman?

It might be time to start hitting the local mower repair shops for junked Craftsman or Poulan Pro rear engine riders.

Yes, the entire unit is individual components. You can see in that part blow up I linked in the original thread.

Issue is I can't even find anyone locally that would have that material I've brought it along, and most Yard shops etc.. well you know the drill.. discontinued.. heaven forbid they use their brains for 2minutes to think of a solution.. if the computer says not available that's the answer. Junk it.

I've looked around online to find something of similar to trace it, that was my idea but even there I'm not having much luck. The stuff is the same material as a car clutch.. nothing more or less.

car clutches have many different materials. I was thinking maybe it was similar to the material in a limited slip differential but that is more steel or bronze plates. Example https://racingdiffs.com/collections/lsd-clutch-plate

I have the clutch pack you need if you still have the mower? I had the same problem and made some myself, and have a few extra sets
