Done it a few times.
Not the best of fixes and after a while it will weep
surfaces must be surgically clean.
The top plate must be in very good condition if the holes are the slightest bit flogged oval replace the top plate.
Drill a hole about 1/8" in front of the visible tip of the crack.
If the crack has forked, drill all the tips
Make sure the bolts in the top plate are tight, they loosen up from vibrations on some Courage engines which is why it cracked in the first place.
Check that they are tight every season.

Check the oil level regularly as it will weep from the repair and wipe it down regularly so you can keep a check on it.
Won't hold just buy you sometime if it's yours if not be up front and honest let them know that a replacement engine might be needed or let them know the case and ask them what they want you to do that you and not responsible for it they want to take the short cut.
