Crack in flywheel keyway area?

Hi:

My 5239 has a small crack in the area of the key way seat on the top of the flywheel. Would this cause any problems? I have had the same problem with a 16.5 hp B&S that permetted the flywheel to wobble as it could not be tightened down to required torque. Required a new flywheel to rectify the problem$$$$$$$ Would this be a problem with my 5239? Perhaps this is why the flywheel began to rub against the legs of the coil.

One thing that I have learned from cracked key way seats is that some people over torque the flywheel nut by using an inpact wrench to tighten the nut!

Cracked key way will effect timing like you said, because you cannot properly torque the flywheel. I have seen cracks in flywheels when people would substitute the aluminum now magnesium, with a steel key and then hit a solid object with a pushmower.

Not a thing to mess with. Install a new or used flywheel. You are spinning this thing over 3000 RPM and if it comes apart you will do a lot more damage if not also to yourself. Anything that spins like the blade or flywheel don't take changes if it is cracked!!!!!!

You can probably find a good used flywheel on eBay.
