This thread won't have anything to do with lawnmowers, either.

But, it is kinda related. We are all here, every one of us, through a computer (even if that computer is a cel phone).

I have win 7 64-bit on my laptop. It's nice. But, when I go to shut it down, it always installs updates. Fine. There is one update that won't install, (dunno what it's for exactly - security something or other) and it keeps trying. It doesn't get the hint it isn't going to install. Anybody have this problem, and if so, how'd you fix it? I tried all the automatic stuff, even went advanced. But, it keeps downloading it, and it keeps NOT installing.

Wasn't it Einstein that said the definition of insanity is to keep trying the same thing and expecting a different result? Maybe computers need a "insanity blocker" macro.........

Can you tell what update is not installing? Is it a Windows update, ot something from a security software company like AVG or Webroot?

If you can identify what update it is, do a search on Google and you may get some help...my laptop and desktop use Vista 32-bit and I have never had a problem with an update not installing.

It's a windows update, and I'd have to run the updater again to get the error. That'll kill my connection's speed. So, I'll let you know ASAP. (like tomorrow) It's some security thing.

Windows 7 (64 bit) is not as well developed as its 32 bit cousins. Lots of third party stuff won't install, not because of the drivers, but because they left the 32-bit installer in it. Had problems with other updates, too, but it let me skip them. It won't with this secutiy one. it just downloads, tries installing, whines, repeat.

I'm not too worried about it - my phone has a stout firewall on it. (that's how I'm online - via a tether to my Android phone). Just annoys me and adds 3 minutes to the shutdown.

We had to wipe our desktop, it has a virus we couldn't get rid of, we now have no audio, it worked before, now it doesn't, so I can sympathize with your frustration. We have xp on the desktop and Vista on the laptop.

It takes a really severe virus to cause enough problems that you have to wipe your desktop. So far this month I have had two infections of a rogue security software that says your computer is infected and it offers you the chance to clean it IF you click on the offer to buy the stuff, name was Antiviurus AV and the other was AntiMalware 6, the virus takes over a lot more than the original infection does. If you see an offer on the screen that says your pc is infected and you do not recognize the name of the security software, IMMEDIATELY log off and shut down your pc. I had to do an update of my Webroot software once I was finally able to reboot my PC, it took two weeks to get it back online because the fake AV was blocking the Webroot AV. I had to order a new CD because the original CD was not updated. GRRRR. Tomorrow I am switching to another brand of Security suite (Kaspersky) because it is reputed to be better than Webroot.

You know what...because I still had a week left on my year's service of Webroot, they tried to steer me to paying $129.99 for their remote virus removal...when the free updated CD was all I needed.

I hate those p-----s who create computer viruses, why can't they use their talents to do something USEFUL instead of trying to damage people's computers? Sometimes I wonder if any of them are on the payrolls of the security software companies to encourage you to buy their products....:confused2:

To me, one of the BIGGEST headaches with computer software is the firewall....thankfully my Blackberry has such a good one built in I have never had any incidents...just wish the computer makers and Bill Gates would do as good a job. FIREWALLS ARE JUST A HEADACHE.
