Hello
I have a coleman 6250 generator it has a briggs&stratton 10 hp engine with a Nikki carburator. my problem is I can start it and it will run for a couple minutes and then will start to chug and blow black smoke out the exhaust, it won't kill the engine. I think it is blowing gas or something out of the exhaust. I took the carburator off and cleaned what I could. But was wondering if the needle wasn't working properly, thinking on trying a carburator kit.
Please help with my problem. Steve
Generators tend to set around for long periods between use, that allows a lot of build up and deterioration in the float bowl and needle seat... check those out, clean up and see if you are still flooding out. If it is then a carb kit will have a new needle/seat to fix you up.
Check that the air filter is not plugged and do change oil in the crankcase as flooding at the carb will result in gasoline in your engine oil, actually it can result in the oil level being too high & that may be why it begins pushing fuel & oil into the carb through the crankcase vent tube.... :smile:KennyV
Even if the carb isn't leaking fuel, fuel present in the oil will cause a rich run situation due to the gas evaporating out of the oil when it gets hot, the fumes get pulled through the breather and acts like an overrich run problem.
