Hello group,
I have a 675exi series 163 CC engine on a new (used 4 times) push mower. The B&S number is 03M02-0070-F1 - It would not start only would run on either. So I bought a new carb for it, installed it no problems. Second pull it started right up but now the engine surges high and low. What do I need to check out to rectify this problem. Thanks in advance.

If it was a new mower you should have taken it back & demanded a refund or exchange.
There are a plethoria of variations on that moungrel black plastic carb so are you sure you got the right one ?
There may heave even been a recall because the early ones were jetted too lean.
Did you buy the carb from someone who knows mowers and supplied the correct one for you model & serial number or just the cheapest "fits B & S 675exi " you saw on ebay or amazon ?

Hi spdway1,

Welcome to the forum sir/ma'am.

Seems you possibly left off the 1 at the start of your engine part number??. If so it says that carb is no longer available. This might be the reason it doesn't run proper??.

You might of over torqued the mounting screws or missed a sealing o-ring gasket. Check for vacuum leaks all around the carb with carb cleaner. The real OEM Briggs carb with the possible no longer available number is only 30 bucks. I'm hoping your new carb was an OEM Briggs part. Call Briggs and see what is the proper carb part number for YOUR mower. They have a toll free number.
