I have a 2135 Cub Cadet (1993 model) with Kohler CH12.5S engine. Finally had to replace original coil recently after about 400hrs. Installed new OEM coil and spark plug to correct air gap, plug gap, etc. Only got about 15-20hrs in before new coil failed. Not sure what my next move should be. Why does a new coil fail? Reluctant to just buy another coil for $60. Engine in great shape otherwise. Any suggestions appreciated. PS. I'm a competent mechanic but a little weak on the electrical side. Thx!

How are you testing the coil to determine whether it is good or bad?

Even news ones go bad, test it, replace it and try again.
I troubleshooter the old one while it was still on the mower by verifying that the spark was weak. After I put a new oem coil and plug in it, ran great for a while then acted same exact way when it failed. What's the best way to test one after it's off the tractor? thx
Cheap & nasty test is to pull off the kill wire and then try starting the engine.
The kill wire is a ground wire and as it runs across the fins they easily rub through the insulation thus earth out all over the place.
