Carburetor

Hello everyone.

I removed the fuel pump to replace the starter on my Vanguard 16hp. When everything was reasembled all was well when I started the mower until I smelt petrol and noticed gasolene pumping out from the carburetor.
This is where I show my lack of knowledge so to make it easier I have attached a photo of where the petrol is coming from. It is from the valve next to the tube going from carburetor to the fuel pump but I do not understand what I did to cause the problem and more important no idea how to fix it.

The carburettor is a Briggs 808728

I desperately need some advice. Because of lockdown, I cannot take the mower to the shop.

Many thanks

Ron

That is the vent.
Fuel comes out of it because the float is not shutting off the fuel .
So it is time to pull the carb apart & clean it
Probably a little bit of rubber came off the fuel lines & is blocking the needle.
If this is an old mower then replace the fuel lines as well as cleaning the carb
Eventually modern fuel will soften the inner liner of the fuel hose..

If this mower has a fuel filter, it is best put between the pump & the carburettor .
I install an in line filter between the tank & the pump on every mower that comes in for service because it makes servicing them easier & cleaner.
Pinching off the fuel line with a pair of lockjaw pliers is a really quick way to wreck the fuel line .

Bertsmobile you are a star.

I removed the carburettor and took off the float and needle. Just as you expected there was a small piece of muck at the base of the needle stopping the float from closing. Muck removed and a good clean followed by reassembling the carburettor resulted in the mower running as it should. In addition, I replaced the fuel line and placed the fuel filter where you suggested.

Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the follow up & happy mowing.
In the previous reply I wrote the word filter where I mean to say "Tap" between the tank & pump.
It has been corrected.
