My new-to-me Honda HRR2168VKA didn't start right up this Spring. I replaced the spark plug and made sure only fresh gas was in the tank and line, but it still wouldn't start. I proceeded to take off the carb to clean it up. When putting it back on, a spring popped off. (Circled in red in the picture.) I never saw where it was before, and I can't figure out where it goes. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for the reply, but I'm afraid that I don't quite follow you. From what I understand, the governor lever is already connected to the throttle lever via the governor arm and throttle return spring. (The first picture below accurately describes how I see these two connected. The second may add a bit more information about the rest of the governor.) Are you suggesting something different?

It goes on the back of the square plate that the throttle control cable attaches to.
when you pull the throttle on past WFO you open the choke.
That sprng goes in there to allow the throttle lever to go past wfo.
It appears ou have the instruction book so go to the choke contol page & the spring position will jump up & bite you.
They are not usually shown on parts breakdowns except at a Honda dealer because it is an OEM part only.

Sorry, but I'm still not finding where the spring goes. I don't have the repair manual -- I've found a few images on the web that others have posted -- but I really do wish it would jump up and bite me. :biggrin:

I've tried attaching it anywhere and everywhere that I think it might fit, but it only fits in places that make no sense whatsoever.

From what I can tell, whenever I simulate an action from the governor or the auto-choke, the carb opens or closes as it should and springs back to its rest position just fine. And the engine runs fine when I start it up and run it for a few minutes. I haven't run it for very long, though.

Any other thoughts?

Short end connects to the hole on the tip of the governor arm.
Long engine connects to the fuel valve bracket.

Thanks for the response, but unless I'm mistaken, I don't think that's the same spring. If I'm looking at the diagram you posted correctly, the one you point out is about 3" long on my mower, and it's connected and working just fine. The one I'm having a hard time placing is around 1" long. It "sprung" off when I was putting the carb back onto the engine, which is why I assumed it went on the carb. I suppose it could be from something else right around there, but I sure didn't see where it came from. Is there anything you know of that fits that description? I really do appreciate the help and wish I would have been a bit more sure-handed.

I'm sharing the photo with our model engineer and will get back to you. There are only so many springs on your mower's fuel/carb/governor system, and the one in the image is most closely like the lower governor spring. The other three are totally different in shape/size, so maybe this loose spring is not from your mower? Stand by.
