Carb spits out gas

I’ve got a craftsman yard vacuum with a Briggs and Stratton 675 series motor that will only start with a shot of ether. It will continue to run but not really smooth. A little choking going on with a puff of black exhaust when it does. It will not restart after I shut it down. Was working fine a few weeks ago. The other symptom is that it spits fuel out the carb. Not a leak but more like a continual mist. Anybody got any ideas what it could be?

Symptoms are coherent with a sticking inlet valve or loose inlet valve seat

Definitely a valve problem but could be adjustment.
