Hi there! I have a cub cadet lt1050 with a Kohler courage 23 engine and I cannot remove the flywheel. I purchased a flywheel puller kit but whenever i tighten it down to pull the flywheel off one of the bolts always breaks. What do I do?
Note: the reason I am trying to remove the flywheel is the mower is very hard to start. Sometimes it wont even start without jumping it. Since it will start sometimes I dont suspect the battery so I assumed a sheared flywheel key. And now that the flywheel is so stubborn I think it proves it.
The flywheel is on a taper and tapers lock tight.
So you need to SHOCK it off the taper not DRAG it off the taper.
Most workshops use a prybar and a dead blow hammer
Back off the retainer 1 or 2 turns.
Put a prybar under the flywheel and lever up as hard as possible
Now smack the crank as hard as you can.
By levering with the prybar you are holding the crank up off the thrust face so it will not damage the cases when you smack it
Naturally you need to protect the threads, I use impact sockets on the end so I am hitting the socket.
You can do the same thing using a pry bar & an air hammer in place of the dead blow hammer.
If you want to see a competiant person doing it , Taryl Fixes All U-tube channel the search removing flywheels.
