Canister air filter for the briggs

Forum Newbie
Because No one made a kit for the Briggs . I made my own. It fits the older round air filter cover better than the newer squared off one. The little factory filter I was having to knock out the dust/dirt several times a day. Anyone interested in how to. Send me a message or email me [email protected].

Why would you knock out the dust several times a day? You break the seal every time you do this. It's your mower. Just install a fresh filter and run it until she takes a couple extra cranks to start or starts losing power. THEN put a new filter in.

Doing the multiple daily beat and bang sessions, you are not trusting the filter. They filter better when dirty.

Nothing in YOUR engine manual states to beat and bang your filter. Eventually you will compromise the element and or seal doing this caveman trick.

Most OEM and afterarket Amazon filters don't seal proper. New or not they are cheaply made poor filters. I take 100% GE silicone and glue my filters on. Once a year replace or when she takes a couple extra cranks slash looses power, replace it. Ain't the space program.

Where I live it is very dusty, so the filter gets clogged up quick. I would knock the dust out several times before I replaced it. Yes I know you should have bought a commercial mower. But when I bought it was to cut just my yard and it sat there more than it was being used, so I picked up a couple of yards to make some extra money to pay the mower payment. Then 2 yards turned into 8. So, when I cut 8 yards in a day the filter is packed. Again yes I know I should have bought a commercial mower you live and learn. Those 8 yards over the last 6 years have paid for this mower over 6 times now.

Slomo - Much of what you have said about air filters, I agree with.

BUT -

When a filter gets to the point of restricting air flow, such that the engine is running rich, the filter has gone way past its clean/replace point.
A rich air/fuel mixture will, reduce available power, "fowl" plugs, increase crankcase oil contamination and increase fuel consumption.
Air filters should always be pre-emptively cleaned/replaced ie don't wait for airflow reduction symptoms to manifest.

Air filter cleaning techniques - Kipharding is only doing what is recommended to clean a pleated "paper" type air filter - that is tapping the filtrer. Sure, there is a big difference between relatively small taps and banging. The latter may cause damage, to the filter, compromise its filtering efficiency, which could result in the engine being "dusted".

Fuel filters - yes you can take them to near blocked (ie clean/replace on condition) as a reduction in fuel flow is unlikely to harm the engine or your pocket. Note: Continued use, with a blocked fuel filter, may result in a lean air/fuel mixture, which in turn may cause elevated engine temperatures - not good!

Oil filters - replace as per engine hour recommendations. In most cases you can’t see or clean an oil filter - replacement is the only viable option.

On the last point - Most domestic engines do not do near enough hours, to justify replacing the oil filter annually. If this be the case, replace the oil annually and the filter biannually (or less) and save a little time & dollars.😈
