i lost compression in one hole on my LA130's 21hp B&S. i found an engine from a L120 (20 horse twin B&S) that is fairly close to me. can anyone tell me if this would be a "direct" swap?

The hole patterns are all the same on the frame and engine, it should be a direct swap.....

are you 100% sure? i appreciate the comment, but dont want to spend $250 on an engine that wont fit. crank shaft size and length is all the same as well? (i guess as long as its a similar pulley that will work work the belt, i wouldnt even have to swap them)

I can find out for sure tomorrow if u aren't in a super hurry, off the top of my head I think they are identical just horsepower differences

If those engines are different I would be very surprised. If the mounting holes are different, just drill new holes in the frame to match the new engine. If the throttle, choke, wiring and fuel lines are different, none of that is very difficult to work around. In case the shafts are different, make sure you get the pulleys that came with that engine. Also, get the exhaust system that came with it to make sure you will have a working muffler. I really don't think the pulleys and exhaust are different, but I could be wrong.

Bolts right in harness, and crank is the same, you'll have to change throttle cable and choke cable

THANKS guys! what a nice tool this internet is to have haha. the guy im getting the engine from has the complete mower. it got backed into and halfways drove over. the rear end is totaled, but everything up front is still good. im hoping he will let me take all the parts i need. or hell, maybe offer him a little more money and take the whole L120 home. thanks again guys

i do not see a problem with what you want to do. If I am not mistaken it was done before.look at the configuration between the two engines if it is the same small task to do it.

good luck

Offer him $25 or $50 more for the whole mower, that way you'll have everything you need and you can get a few dollars out of the scrap steel and aluminum left over. Or.....if you're so inclined, sell the parts you don't need.

funny you should say that. thats exactly what i did. in an earlier post i said the rear end was wrecked. i must have misunderstood the guy.....it was the front end. it broke the front axle off, bent a tie rod, and cracked the hood. aside from that it doesnt seem to be too bad of a machine. there are 168 hours on it. i got it all for $250

You did great!! Not only did you get everything you need to do the engine swap, but looks like you got a good deck to sell along with lots of other parts. I haven't had any trouble out of my K46 transaxle yet, but lots of folks do. You might want to hang on to that part, you might need it down the road.

Front axle repair = cheap......I've seen very little problems with 100 series transaxles but when they do have a problem it a replace the tranny type lol. You stole that thing.....

i just wanted to update this for anyone in the future searching for similar info. the swap between the two engine went almost perfect. the only thing that was different was the fuel pump on the LA130 21hp engine was on the left side, and the pump on the L120's 20 hp engine was on the right side. so i needed a new, longer fuel line, but other than that it was a direct swap. electrical plugs, tranny belt pulley, deck drive pulley, engine mounting pattern, choke/throttle cables, exhaust, etc... was all the same. the engines do have completely different carb setups on them, but that didnt make a difference
