if i have .008 when checking the camshaft endplay, i would have to put the shim or shims on the opposite end from the gear to decrease the clearance in the measurement. not the oil pan side of the camshaft journal unless im looking at the wrong way. it looks to me as if the camshaft has borrowed or rubbed down the surface of the housing opposite the oil pan side. if i add shim to get .005 where you take the measurement from, its going to push the camshaft even further into the journal on the opposite side of the oil pan.
