Good evening Grass Rats, had a question regarding the timing marks, and what's correct/incorrect.
I was swapping the covers on 2 Quantum Engines that I received. Engine on left had low compression, and I believe just needs a valve adjustment to run, however engine on right I was only able to test compression, but needed to change cover before I could see if starts and runs properly....
I noticed the timing marks on cam lined up where crank gear tooth was perfectly in-between 2 teeth and in center of mark on cam, however engine on the right is one tooth off....
These are different year, and versions, but are they both supposed to line up the same way? Or is engine on right mistimed?
Any, and all help appreciated...

I don't know but it looks like one engine skipped a tooth.

Yep or was assembled wrong
I gather they are both used engines
Most mower engines will run 1 tooth out .........badly

they missed the mark , it should have been between the teeth to line up right , like the one on the first pic

Actually some runs better. I remember an old 12.5 riding mower that I did in my early twenties that I did install the camshaft off one tooth and it actually preform a lot better mowing grass. Just wish I remember which way I threw it off.

Now that might have been normal as I also had to convert the ignition system to electronic from points.

Advanced cams provide more low and midrange torque. Retarded packs more upper end punch.
