Briggs pull start issue.

I have a briggs motor on a power washer that is acting up . I can pull start the motor and do a project then shut it down. When I go to restart the motor the pull cord will not budge. I pull the recoil mechanism off and the pull cord pull nice and smooth. If I try to rotate the flywheel with my hands it will not move. If I use a socket wrench to turn the flywheel it will not move one direction but with a little effort it will go the opposite direction and then back the other direction smooth as can be. I reattach the recoil unit and the motor fires right up and I can continue my project until the next time stop and the problem starts all over again.

Make sure you release the pressure on the wand before trying to start. Most consumer pressure washers don't have an easy start feature therefore you are pulling over the engine and the pressure that is being held in the pump.

With my pressure washer, I have to make sure there is water running thru the pump, and I often pull the gun trigger when pulling the start rope. Almost always starts, 1st or 2nd pull

Always have water running when starting a pressure washer. Always squeeze trigger when starting a pressure washer to relieve pressure so you can start engine. Never leave engine running for more than 1-2 minutes without squeezing the trigger to circulate the water. You will burn up the pump otherwise.

Welcome to your first experience with pressure pump hydro locking.

When you shut it down, turn the water off and hit the nozzle handle to take the pump pressure off and drain the water out

When you begin again, start the engine and run it for 30 seconds, then turn the water on and pressure wash what you need to.

Repeat this procedure each time.

If the machine sits for a period of time turn the water on for a second or two to prime the pressure pump. then cut the water and hit the nozzle handle to relieve the pressure before starting the engine.

It's all a matter of timing your steps.
