I have an old Craftsman tiller with a rusted out and “no longer available “ gas tank. Engine is a Briggs Model 135202. Carb may be ok, plus I see a lot of Amazon replacements.
1. Can I substitute tank/carb assembly from another model Briggs?
2. If not, can I get rid of the old tank and connect a separate tank to the carb via a hose to the carb dip tube?
Tiller seems in great shape, so I don’t want to scrap it.
Thanks to anyone that can give me some direction.

Please post your full model number, model, type and code. Two different tanks were used with the model you posted, one NLA and the other is still available, depending on you type number.

You can also consider looking for a used one. There were millions made. A mower bone yard should have a good one. As Rivets indicated, the fiche shows two different tanks on that generic engine number you listed.

Also: I think the Briggs p/n to be 694 315. If correct, this appears to be a rare bird, maybe only found in bone yards(?)

694315 seems to be the correct part number. You are correct, you will have to now do the leg work and check with every repair shop in you area. Also, some rural areas have drop off sites that take just about anything, might also try them. Last option, talk to your friends and see if there are any old farts like me who still work on small engines in their spare time. We are known for never throwing anything out as it’s still good and nay need it down the road.

Thanks, Rivets.

As Grandpa used to say, “keep something for seven years and you will have a use for it”. Unfortunately I am operating under conditions that represent MULTIPLES of 7 years….

Looks like I will be visiting some new friends come Monday.

Thanks, again. And Happy Fourth, too.

Lots of places like this. I have gotten items from a couple of them when no one else had them.

Also - this guy sometimes has NLA items. https://randysengine.repair/product...laces-495405-498107-497678?variant=1157237444
