A 175 cc vertical shaft Briggs labeled “professional” with about 30 hours started smoking terribly, probably a broken ring, is this common? Engine was serviced regularly, ran great ….

How often have you removed the blower housing to make sure the engine cylinder fins are clean ?
Cause an overheating issue could possibly cause this.

yeah, thought of that, fins were clean, had no symptoms of overheating. Just one of those things I guess. Ran great, had no throttle control so it always ran at the set rpm.

Is it common-no, is it rare-yes.

Check the oil level
If the fuel leaked into the engine because the carb float needle is not sealing the sump fills with fuel and that causes a lot of smoke
This is probably the most common engine problem I come across on new engines .
The oil will need to be changed 2 times and of course the carb cleaned
