I have a crack in my current oil (sump) pan so I purchased a used one. I wasn't there when my dad put it back together so i don't know if he did it right or not; however the governor assemble was destroyed when the engine started. Looking at it closer today I noticed the original pan has a groove in the shaft for the governor assembly whereas the new one doesn't (see attached pictures). Can anybody tell me if this groove is needed? Would appreciate the help.
PS, this whole issue started because of the 3/8" NPT pipe plug used for the drain (which is a tapered plug). I was always worried about this and only used my wrist to tighten it; however, it is old and aluminum and cracked. Know I've purchased a brass pipe that has an elbow on the end and a drain plug in it...just passing this along to prevent somebody else a lot of pain.
