BRIGGS and STRATTON CARB # 798758 PROBLEMS

Trying to figure out if I need to replace this carb. I believe the gas was bad when last used. I disassembled it, diaphram is ok, cleared the screen and pick up tube but when I reinstall the pick up, I cannot blow air thru it. The primer bulb also stays stuck in when priming the gas. Is there something between the bulb and the tube that can be cleared or do I need to replace the carb?

You should be able to push air through the pick up tube. Soak the carb tube with carb cleaner or have the carb ultrasonicly cleaned. Blow through the tube with compressed air or bottled air carefully. It should open up. Reinstall carb with a new diaphragm and gasket, make sure you install them correctly. These carbs are so simple I don't see a reason to replace.

The tube itself is clear so its definately inside the carb somewhere and since the primer bulb sticks.... there's a relation there!

How old is this engine? If the primer bulb is old and not flexible it will stick and not return to it's proper position. If the gasket and diaphragm are installed in the wrong order nothing will work. You need todo some checking. When you report back, please include model, type and code numbers.

I'm not sure of the age. It was purchased used. Gasket and diaphragm was installed eaxctly the way it was found. The symptoms were the same before it was disassembled. The engine is 10T802-0457-b2 . The carb is very common , this one is part# 798758 . The primer bulb is flexible. It appears there is a vacum created when pressed meaning that's probably a clue why its not running. I can pour gas in the carb to start and die but will not run on its own. It's not getting gas.

If you would have posted the code number, i would be able to tell you the engine age. When you assemble the carb to the tank, diaphragm rests on the tank, gasket will go against the carb. Fuel pump spring rests on the diaphragm, do you have this spring? When tightening the screws the throttle shaft must be held in the wide open position. There is no vacuum when pushing the primer bulb, the primer puts pressure on the diaphragm, and working with the fuel pump spring, pushes fuel into the carb throat. If not assembled correctly or missing the pump spring, will result in your condition. Have you got a Briggs L-head service manual to help you. If not they are available free in PDF form on the Internet. At the present time we are unable to posts links here, so you will have to do a google search.

New Diaphram, new bulb(the bulb wasnt sticking , it was just worn out) now I can get it to run when I prime it with gas in the carb, but will only run if I keep my hand over the air intake... and I sprayed out everything with carb spray when i had it apart

Does it run with the air filter on? Your choking it to keep it running which would most likely be a fuel restriction, may also have an air leak.

no, Ive felt it was a fuel supply all along.

Please, please, please answer the questions if you want help. You are making assumptions as to what is wrong and not reading replys. I've asked question, but without answers I can not offer solutions. It seems you don't want help from me, so I will back out of this thread. Other members will pick up where I couldn't.

Rivets he did put up the engine code 10T802-0457-b2

Yes, but I also asked for the code so I could date the engine. How he installed the diaphragm and gasket, order is critical. Did he have the pump spring and was it installed correctly. First he says the primer bulb is good, then he says he repaved the primer bulb, it was worn out. Also asked if he had a manual. He assumes he knows how a carb works, but is just guessing and looking for a quick answer, which I can't give with the info provided.

I understand that most of your questions had gone unanswered. I was hoping to defuse the situation and get more answers for you so we could get him fixed.

Check the inlet mainfold.
They can come loose.
There is an O ring in the carb end that gets worn or lost completely.
The induction tube is quite long and prone to cracking.
There is a gasket on the engine end that can leak
Gorillars with spanners do it up too tight and strip the threads or break off the mounting tabs.
There are several different induction tubes that all look similar but some will not make a proper seal.

This and several other things can make the engine run lean and produce the problems you have listed.

Please remember you are there & we are here.
you are our eyes & ears so using terms like "worn out" means nothing to us.
Respond as if you were explaining what you see to a child or a blind person thus reducing the chance of misunderstandings.
We need to know exactly what you SEE not how you have evaluated what you saw.
Some memebers are in the trade and need details to check refference materials.
This might seem trivial to you but is important to us who are remote from the engine.

Don't get one of those black plastic replacement kits off ebay. This might be a simple carb, but they couldn't make one that worked.
