Hello,

I have a Sears lawnmower with the engine described in the Title (Briggs and Stratton 19.5 HP 42E707). The engine starts and idles ok but when any load is put on the governor stops the engine. Any idea what would cause this? Thank you for any help.

Sounds like your carb is dirty or not adjusted usually is not the governor unless someone was taking it off or playing around with it you can check the linkages and the springs too

Thanks TOT202,

I'll check that out in the next couple of days. It could be that something is sticking in the carb because sometimes it goes and other times it dies.

It sounds like the govenor arm has come loose on the govenor rod and is not backing off when the engine slows down.
Also you might have a blocked carb.
start the engine.
put your finger on the govenor arm and move it slowly back & forward.
If the engine behaves as expected then the carburettor is OK
Hold your finger loosly against the govenor arm and again work the arm manually.
try to distinguish if the arm is pushing harder against your finger as the engine speed increases.
If not the govenor is faulty and you will need to split the cases to get in there & fix it.
