Crank case pressure build up. ( Plugged vents, worn out piston rings, bad head gasket )

If the engine was tilted the wrong way it would cause oil to pool in the filter box as well.

Old oil becomes very "watery" thickness and running like this makes oil splash around more then normal and even the smallest tilt can make oil go where it's supposed to.
Craftsman?? small push mower? large rider? Steep hills? Flat Ground? Are you tilling it? Do you maintain this mower with schedule oil changes? If not I would say engine problems not a normal thing to happen..
