Nube here: My Briggs 18.5 engine locks up when trying to crank it. Without the sparkplug it spins real fast and has good compression. I have no gauge but it blows my finger out of the hole with a lot of pressure . I pulled the head and the valves are not stuck. The pushrods were opening the valves as best as I could see. What else can I do? :confused2:

Is it the right spark plug and were valve clearances good?

Common on OHV engine's, sounds like your valves need adjusting.

Either valve clearance or your decompressor has broken which
Is on the end of the camshaft.

I can send you detailed Instructions for adjusting the valves which includes a Compression Release test IF you like. Address below, put in proper format and remind me engine model number and what you want.
