I built this log splitter about 25 years ago and it has split may tons of wood during that time. I changed the oil about a month ago and a few days ago I started it and it had a knock. I've started it several times and it knocks every time. The engine numbers are 252417 5526 01 and I assume this last set of numbers are the serial #, 92111010. I took it apart and the wrist pin is tight and the connecting rod has very little wear but I don't think it's enough to cause the noise I heard and the balancing weights seem to be in excellent shape. I've never run it fast since I've had the engine, maybe half speed. Everything inside looks OK. Do any of you have any idea why this thing would suddenly start knocking?
I looked it up on Jack's small engines and it says a special tool is needed for the balance weights when reassembling. I assume that is to time them with the piston. I was thinking I had read one time that the weights could be removed and it would still run OK. Is that true?
Attached is a picture of the crankcase cover.
Thanks for any help,
