Just bought a 'MrBeer' at the mall yesterday. I do love my beer!

Anybody here have one? Any suggestions? How'd it turn out? I haven't played with it yet.....and to ruin a batch of beer would be a sin.......

Too late, I already bought the thing.

Don't those minis work great? I got a JW dundee's a long time ago (just a big can..........BIG can), and the beer just went flat. Wouldn't pour, nothing. I didn't get another mini keg until I got one of those Miller Lite ones......worked flawlessly! I wouldn't hesitate getting another....if they ever go on sale again...:frown:

I just googled Mr. beer and I discovered it's a home brewery system. I have no experience with this but it's been going on for several thousand years so the mystery should be worked out by now.
I have often thought about home brewed beer anfdI have tried it several times. I would sure like to know how it works for you. Lots of people are brewing these days.
I suppose the finished product depends on the quality of the ingredients.
Please keep me informed as this to me is more interesting than snow removal.

Turns out my sister has one. Just saw her.

The beer is very good, and she said it was easier than you'd think, but not as easy as the box makes it sound. Guess the worst part is the sterile environment. Everything that will touch the beer at any stage must be bacterium - free. One thing you forget to wash, and it'll taste funky I guess.

The whole thing looks time consuming, due to the sterilization proceedures, but the rest is straightfoward. You get this can of motor honey (that's the best way I can describe it, it's an extract of the malt and hops), a packet of sterilizer powder, a packet of yeast, and 'booster' to increase alcohol. You just sterilize the plastic fermenter with a half packet of sterilizer (along with everything that will touch the beer) - like washing dishes in the stuff. Then you put the ingredients into a pot, stir it, bring it to a boil, put water in the fermenter, add the wort (the boiled brew), and seal it up. Let it sit for 14 days.

After that, you bottle it. You sterilize/dry the bottles (pop bottles plastic or glass, or used glass beer bottles) put about a 1/2 tsp of sugar in each bottle to get the carbonation going, and you cap it. Then you let it sit in either the fridge or in a cellar-like place for another 14 or so. Then it's ready!

This is what I've read. Like I said, sounds easy. Time consuming, but easy. Hope I don't get it contaminated. I'll let you know the results in a month!

Till then, think I'll get one of those mini kegs........

Okay if you got it started ... you only have about 3 wks to go...
It does seem like a lot of bother... UNLESS you figure out how to make it just the way you like it... then it may easy be worth the time. :smile:KennyV

Okay, update:

About a month ago, I started the Mr. Beer process. I'd bought another kit from a junk store complete for cheap, so I made two batches: One stout, one with the 'pale ale' that comes with the kit. Both had fermented (I gave them a month instead of a week, to allow for better mellowing of flavors).

Went to my dad's yesterday, and we bottled them in 12oz glass. Dad bought the capping system, so we could re-use old bottles.

I must say, this was a LOT of work for 42 bottles of beer. Not hard, just very time-consuming. The sterilization process is the WORST part of it. Everything must be well-washed, and spritzed with sterilizer solution. It's a giant PAIN. Dunno if I'm going to do it very often. Even with the two of us working together, it took 2 hours or more to bottle just under 2 cases.

That'd last me like a week and a half if I just drank this stuff exclusively. It tastes okay, but it'll take another month of 'conditioning' before it's really ready to go. At least I know what it takes to make beer now.

Reminds me a lot about the sanitation required for canning tomatoes at home....

Same idea. Making the stuff to go into a container isn't the hard part - it's the stupid sanitation that is just a PAIN. :frown:
