brake issues on craftsman

i have a 18hp 44 inch craftsman 2 model 917-254721,having problems with brakes,just bought tractor and trying to get it working right,if i tighten them up ,then when tractor is running it gets stuck in gear and have to shut it off to get out of gear,is there somewhere to look at a pic of the brake setup to make sure im not missing parts,any help would be great

I am assuming that you are talking about the little disc brake on the transmission. If you tighten it too much you may be creating a situation where the clutch part of the system may not be disengaging all the way and therefore not taking belt pressure off of the transmission gears. adjust the brake to where if you set the parking brake and then can slide the tires across the grass and not any tighter then you need to to get the brakes to work.
