blank screen hour meter b&s 22hp v twin bronco

I noticed that the hour meter was not working, so i thought I'de start by checking the plugin........i got a 12v reading on one wire and concluded that if i had power to it, that i should get some kind of reading ......the screen is just blank........Is it wiring or just a dead gage??......I'm leaning toward..dead gage??........thanks in advance.......no hurry.......just trying to find something else to tear into

some hour meters work off of battery voltage to indicate that the engine is running or at least the key is on. But they have their own internal battery that keeps track of the hours and that battery goes dead over time and basically kills the gauge.

I tore this one down to the circuit board.......no battery.in it.....I got 12 v to two wires but I couldn't get a flicker anywhere......I think it's dead....It had a nice long life........
