Working on a 42" Hustler model 927368/ SN 05011533

Helping a friend with his issue: When he turns blade clutch on the engine dies.......mower was operational until this problem developed. I would appreciate help with where to begin the problem search. Fuses are good.

Thanks in advance,

bartles

First place to start is the seat safety switch.

Yep, it's good.

How did you test it? Some seat switches need a jumper to test.

Did that, using the wife in the seat....open circuit with her sitting in the seat

If you’re positive the seat switch is good the next thing to test is the PTO switch.

Hustler Fastrak with 16 hp Honda engine.

Sorry Rivets this mower's seat uses a NO switch. So with the OP wife sitting on the seat it should a closed circuit; not an open circuit. Provides 12v to the kill relay to open the kill circuit whenever the PTO is on or one of the lap bars is not in neutral position.

Please refer to the Hustler FasTrak General Service Manual for wiring diagram and the IPL for the seat switch PN.

Note: Switch color is a hint. Its should be a black switch. If grey/gray it is the wrong switch.

I am not getting 12volts between the wiring harness connections from the seat nor the steering lever(s) switches. I see three relays on the mower...two in the instrument panel and in the starter motor area on the engine. The wiring diagram I have from Hustlers online parts manual only indicates two relays...

Am I looking at the correct diagram (s/n 05011533)?

The owner says he lost the key so he started the motor by turning the key switch with a knife. I have replaced the key switch with a new one...no joy. Battery is new, 12volts strong.

That could be a bad Neutral or reverse safety switch

HAve you checked the wiring diagram ( I have not by the way )
A lot of these switches are ground switches and not power switches so there is never 12V on them
This is why Star told you to get the wiring diagram.
If you can not find one ask and some one will either post one or a link to where you can find one
I have no Hustlers in my repair run and not being an authorised dealer I have no access to this information from Australia .

But sound like have this wiring setup instead the above one if you have three relays.. Just slightly different wiring for the extra starter relay (solenoid).

12v should be on L whenever the switch is in run or start positions.

Well fellows, most of the time we "shade tree" mechanics overlook the obvious. I went back to the fuses (1-15 & 1-20amp)and checked voltage across them to discover the 20 amp fuse was blown. I did not look close enough to see the one of the bases of the "Z" was not there. P
