Big Rear Wheels

I've seen some push mowers with bigger rear wheels. They're usually a little more expensive than the ones with smaller wheels. What's the advantage to larger rear wheels?

My yards are NOTHING but less smooth areas and no matter how big the rear wheels are I can still feel the bumps

You will still feel them .... but easier rolling... keep mowing:tongue:

So, if you have a nice smooth yard, the bigger wheels would not be needed, right? Mine's not nice and smooth, but I'm just wondering.

Since you are always lightly tilting a push mower on the rear wheels ... even a flat level lawn will be easier with taller wheels in the rear to pivot on... :smile:KennyV

That makes sense, KennyV. A friend of mine wouldn't buy a mower that didn't have the bigger rear wheels. Now I know why.

I'm not sure the big wheels are always more expensive, but they are getting harder to find. I used to be able to get a 22 in MTD with a 6.5 hp B&S for about $179 at most box stores. I was doing work on distressed properties for mortgage companies and during cutting season could use one to the point that the piston rings wore out.

I was making enough doing it that it was cheaper to buy a new one when I needed it. What I liked was that the wheels at the time were 16 inch. I think a big wheel now is around 12. Very easy to maneuver in rough ground with tall grass. It was also easy to tip up on the rear wheels and pick up into the back of my truck.
