Better Mulching Blades?

Hey all, I recently bought a Honda HRR216VYA. I was told that I didn't need to buy a special blade for mulching, since the double blade supposedly cuts so finely. However, I've been disappointed with the clumps of cut grass left on the lawn, compared to my old Snapper with a mulching blade.

Has anyone used a different mulching blade on the Honda, like the Oregon Gator Mulcher or other? If so, does it work better? Do you just remove both original blades and use a single Gator (or other brand) mulching blade?

Thanks!

I never noticed the cut quality on my Honda HRR216VKA until I started using other mowers. Now, after buying a Honda HRX217HYA, I won't go back, the cut is SO much better. No, I have not tried getting different blades. I won't go back to the HRR, the HRX is faster, cuts better, has a blade-brake-clutch........

The HRX will cut faster and better because it's a 190cc engine, the HRR is the 160cc. I run the Honda 190cc on my Cub Cadet 21" and it will cut about anything.

Yeah, the HRR has the QuadraCut System while the HRX have the MicroCut Twin Blades, which cuts even finer. Obviously, though, I'm not going to run out and buy an HRX having just bought my HRR.

Can you put the MicroCut Twin Blades on the HRR? I'm guessing not. Hence my question about the Gator blades, which some people rave about, and are only 15 bucks.

Incidentally, my HRR does have the Roto-Stop blade brake, that's not exclusive to the HRX series.

Gator Blades all the way.

Have you put them on a Honda? Do you replace the twin Honda blades with a single Gator, or do you use twin Gators? (The link I posted on the original post makes it look like you use 2 Gator blades, but I'm not sure that's true.)

You can get an HRR with the Roto-Stop (only the HRR216VYA model). It is a little button on the side, a different place than on the HRX models. Honda Lawn Mowers: HRR216VYA, HRR216K8VYA

An HRX would be a good investment in the future! It is way better than the HRR for many reasons:
1. Speed
2. Power
3. Roto-Stop (easier to use than the HRR Roto-Stop)
4. NeXite deck...I never cleaned it! The aluminum deck on my HRR needed cleaning all the time!
5. No mulch plug...it has the Clip Director
6. It has the 4-in-1 Versa-Mow System....you can mulch, bag, rear discharge, or shred leaves!

Um, yeah, that's what I said.

Can you put the MicroCut Twin Blades on the HRR?

The OEM blades are engineered to be part of the mower's structure, and as the MicroCut and QuadraCut are different designs (off-set, shape, weight, etc.) Honda says they are not interchangeable. While they might physically fit, Honda does not recommend swapping 'em out.
