battery tray corrosion

the battery tray and hold down bolts on my Craftsman tractor are covered with white corrosion. The condition was present with my old battery and is back after installing a new battery three weeks ago. What is causing this condition??

short answer ... battery acid... have any cans of coke in the fridge? pour it all over the corrosion.

It's acid but, rather than having a sticky sugar mess, just Mix common baking soda with water.... about a cup of baking soda to a quart of tap water....
pour the mix on anything that may have acid... it will foam up and neutralize any acid....

BTW all shops & garages should have some premixed available for those emergency flushing needs... for your eyes, skin or clothing... :smile:KennyV

Kenny you are correct of course... I left off "rinse throughly" from my comments. This was my Dad's solution he taught me when I was bout 10.

Remember the old days when they just placed a penny on the top of the battery. It was intended to attract the corrosion. I don't think there is enough copper in the pennys now:laughing:

Pop works okay... BUT it costs too much, & is messy... arm and hammer baking soda is cheep and works Sooo well...
fastback, Your also right about copper in pennies... there is no good metal in any coins anymore ... there use to be a lot of things you can do with silver coins... but no more. :smile:KennyV
