Battery quit charging...

My Craftsman 17 hp Kohler riding mower quit charging the battery. I replaced the battery because it was old, but I still only get 12.6 volts at the new battery when the engine is running or when it is turned off. Can someone please tell me how to test the charging system? Thanks

You don't say which Kohler engine you have, but most Kohler engines use the same charging system. This manual should answer most of your questions.

You should be getting 28 AC volts to the rectifier and from there close to 14 DC volts to the battery at wide open throttle.

Looks like the stator is bad... anything I can do except buy a new one? Thanks

Sorry, if it tests bad, time to replace.
