My mower is a ariens courage with the kohler xt-7 engine. It runs for about a minute then it dies, try to restart and no go. I then add a little oil and then it starts but only runs for about a minute then dies again.

WELCOME to LMF...
First check the oil level, Make sure it is NOT over full OR low.
(oil level will have nothing to do with starting the engine), it only effects how long it will run before it destroys itself... Too much OR too little oil will damage an engine.

How much oil does it need to run properly?

Full, But not over filled...
The point I was trying to make was that there is nothing in the engine that will detect an over under oil fill...
A small engine will in fact run perfect with no oil... for a short time, before it destroys itself...
Oil is used to lubricate And Cool an engine. With out proper Lubrication & Cooling it will eventually seize up...
If you add oil, thinking that will have anything to do with it's ability to start or keep running, you are likely going to Over fill the crankcase... And there is not enough room in an engine for all the moving parts if the oil level is too high...
Your statement: "It runs for about a minute then it dies, try to restart and no go. I then add a little oil and then it starts but only runs for about a minute then dies again."...
The fact that it started after adding oil is coincidental to the actual problem...
Check your oil level... and if it's overfilled remove some oil, then when it is at the proper, full level, we can Then proceed to find the starting/running problem...
