Hello, I have a Craftsman riding mower with the 20HP Briggs engine. It has been using oil and lately the oil has turned black. Just a few hours running since oil and filter changed. My guess was intake valve seal and head gasket bad. Disassembled today and found both to be bad. My question is how to remove and install the valve seal. Tried prying the seal out for a short time and gave up. Any hints? Also what tool to press the new seal in. Thank You for any help............Jay

Heat the seal, you can take it red hot if you like then pry it off
OR cut down one side with a micro disc or die grinder or Dremel type tool then peel it off.

To install use a socket.
Again if you have a rotary tool grind out one that is smaller than the seal and tap it on.

Briggs do make a tool to both remove & replace the seals but it is a bit dear for a single home use.

Before removing the old seat make sure you have a new seat in hand. You can’t buy seats for many of today’s engines.
