I have a B&S 4 stroke engine mounted on an old Mountfield (UK) mower and the fuel tank is badly cracked. The only reference I can find is a label on the side of the tank:
“FAMILY 4BSXS.1581VA 276080”
Is this enough information to find the part no. for a new fuel tank?

That is the EPA registration number which is worthless. The model number should be in the format at xxxxxx-xxxx-xx xxxxxxxx And will actually say model-type-code above the actual numbers. Some will have model-type-trim-code

Depending on mower engine could be above the spark plug on the blower housing. on the flap that overhangs the muffler, Side of blower housing. top of blower housing next to recoil.

Also look on the valve cover if you have one, if you don't see it ,maybe the valve cover was installed upside down and the numbers are facing down. Mirror or cell phone camera to see.

Thanks for that. You guys impress me with your knowledge!
It was on the housing above the spark plug. It had been painted over but a wire brush solved that:

Now to find the fuel tank part number.

Thank you! 494406 turns out to be quite a common fuel tank. Plenty available and Chinese makes are a third of the price of B&S OEM ones. As it's an old mower, I think a cheap one will suffice.
