Hi.

I have a Deutscher ride on mower with a Briggs & Stratton 14.5HP Engine. 287707-1224-E1

The mower currently needs a new muffler. The one that is currently fitted is a 496022S with an adapter.

When looking for parts for this engine I found that there were 3 different mufflers available.

According to the parts websites I have seen they are interchangeable but it doesn't look like it would fit without a different adapter or modifications.

I was wanting to know if a 498984S would definitely be a direct replacement part for this engine or not?

It is a bigger muffler and listed as "super low tone" whereas the 496022S is listed as "low tone".

I want to quieten down the ride on as much as possible so I would prefer the 498984S if it is possible to use.

Also I cannot buy the 496022S locally I would have to ship it which will cost twice the price so the 498984S is cheaper for me to purchase.

There is nothing on the mower itself that would interfere with installing a different muffler, it's all down to the engine being compatible.

Thanks.

The muffler that you mentions appears to be like the MTD hang down in front of the axle type muffler, Would require an exhaust manifold, and brackets to attach that muffler to the frame of the mower. I didn't find the other parts to attach it any place.

The 498984s would not be a direct replacement, but it would probably work with a custom manifold and support bracket.
The kit pictured is for 220000 and 250000 engines. I don't see a 280000 kit.

Thanks for your advice.

As you said ILENGINE I am fairly sure the 498984S it is the hang down type and it is attached with a clamp.

It doesn't seem to have brackets to attach it to the mower when used this way. Just the clamp.

The adapter (864A) used for this seems to be the same as the one I already have (864) minus the outer flange.

I can't seem to find this adapter (864A) anywhere and it isn't referenced on any of the parts websites.

If it is almost the same I can just cut off the flange on the one I have with an angle grinder and use a hose clamp or similar to attach.

Here is some of the information I have found specific for this engine.

And the parts manual available from the B&S website.
