B&S Chrome Plating!

This is a 1981 Snapper 21400P my latest CL pick up. To be sure, these are "after" pictures, that is after a rinse-off and respray. The nasty "before" pictures are hard on the eyes and won't be posted as such, but I digress. The engine is a B&S 114908. The plated muffler cover and filter cover apear to be original since there is a maintenance instruction sticker still on. What an intresting touch. What was B&S thinking? At any rate it is a nice touch and shows a bit of flair, first I've seen this kind of trim aside from a Ford or a Chevy. Comments anyone? Otherwise, the engine purrs and still performs the way you would expect a B&S engine of this vintage, and I am satisfied with the way it behaves on my lawn.

It was not an actual restore job, only a clean up and WalMart spray paint to ward off rust, and to make it easier on the eyes, took about a day. This example showed that these machines can take alot of abuse and neglect in 30 years of grass cutting. I put it right to work its not ready to retire, I expect it will still be cutting grass 30 years from now and someone will paint it again as a reward for good service at that time.

I recall the days when a quality fit and finish was necessary to compete when it came to big ticket items, like mowers for example. I fear those days are gone never to return. Oh, the pain.

Less than $50 don't recall. I did not ask whether it was original owner. The deck had several stickers from lawn mower shops in Austin Tx, so it's been in the area for some years I think. From the CL pictures, it looked awfull, and I was looking at it because I wanted to squirrel away some useful parts that it might have, I did not expect it to be fully functional and no rust to speak of. These can take alot of abuse.

I can't remember the last time I saw a pre-1983 vertical-recoil I/C engine snapper. I like the polished air cleaner cover. Good machine.

That engine is not original. It's an over the counter service engine.

Love old mowers!

I have a few old Lawn Boys, but one needs a new motor and I have no clue how to fit one on and the other starts when it feels like it.
