I bought a White 833R walk behind mower from an estate auction for just a few dollars but can't get it started as it is not producing any spark. I believe this has a solid state coil system which I thought were sort of foolproof and have bypassed the shut off switch but still no luck. Ordering parts seems a bit confusing to me and I am not sure that whatever I order will be the right part, or are solid state coils pretty much generic for a 8.5hp B&S Magnatron motor?

Let’s start with something simple. Remove the engine cover, (shroud) then remove the kill wire from the coil. Reinstall the cover and test for spark with a new spark plug or good spark tester. No spark = bad coil. Spark = kill wire shorting out somewhere. If you provide us with all the numbers off the shroud we will be able to tell you the correct part number for the coil. The should be three sets of numbers.

I haven't had the chance to remove the covers yet to do the testing but the numbers stamped on the id plate are;

model 23B702
type 1143-E1
sn(I'm guessing) 9808242E
