Ok...rookie mistake, I'm into this 23hp 44C777 for other reasons and completely forgot to make a note of the timing mark.
The cranks gear is clearly marked at the keyway with a dot, but the cam has 2 choices almost across from one another, a dot and a straight line.
If I line up the dot with the crank and rotate, the other line is off one tooth- and vice versa , put the line with the crank dot and then the dot is off one tooth.
50 - 50 chance one of them is correct but which one? nothing mentioned in the repair manual except to line up the marks.
Thanks for a great forum, I learned alot reading here.

I seen that, but it doesn't mention anything about the other mark?
is it possible the straight line mark on the cam is for timing a different model? I know they use the same 901 cam in quite a few models, the reason I mention that is I just pulled the sump off a 49E877 motor (28hp) and the cam timing was set to the straight line & not on the dot?
thanks for the help, Much appreciated!
