B&S 17HP Engine Locked up

The 17HP B&S Intec engine on my Scotts lawn tractor has locked up. It will not go past top dead center. I would like to know what could cause this. Thank you.

What were you doing with it before it locked up? Was it sitting in the garage and wouldn't start? In which case I'd take the spark plug out and see if it will turn over. Could be gasoline down in the cylinder preventing the piston from moving. Or if run low on oil, it could have thrown a rod and locked the engine up. I have seen balancing gears get locked up as well inside the engine. Hope you get some idea of what it is before you start into tear down.
